So I went into the Joker movie expecting it to suck. I also went into it expecting it to be action, superhero, fighting, stupid DC movie, they all suck, we been knew, and kooky joker “haha” comedy
….it… was none of those things
It was a deep psychological horror film, possibly better at being horror than most horror movies to come out this last decade.
No jump scares, no horror tropes, no stupid CGI, no oogly-googly monsters with wacky-dacky limbs, no stupid “horror noises” and no horror music.
Just deeply unsettling visuals and a feeling of dread; the way horror should be.
If you’re off-put by all the media’s “fedora-wearing riot” freak-outs and “cult” this movie appears to be developing with a weird juggalo school-shooter-glorifying fanbase, that’s fine, the fandoms of most things are … like that.
But this movie isn’t about those things, and I am glad that the hype and fandom of this movie was the only bad thing about it.
It’s beautifully shot, wonderful cinematography, outstanding performance from the lead actor, and I say this as not only a huge movie critic but also a person who has never enjoyed DC movies all that much.
I dare say it.
DC might have finally found their calling. And it’s, oddly enough, horror movies.
